Is Money Working For Or Against You?

This article will provide some very helpful information for individuals to learn how money can be working for them or work against them. Many people do not understand how money works. I want to change that.

What Can You Do With Money?

There are basically two things that someone can do with money and that is save or spend it. Most individuals are extremely good at spending it. Only a smaller percent of the population actually know how to save it. What most people do not know is how money works. Money is a great tool but can be a burden to people when they have debt. This is where the lender has some control over you. When you borrow and do not know how to pay it back, you are a slave to money. Credit cards are designed to make one a slave. The reason being is most people misuse them and get themselves deeper in debt. Now money is working against them.

Conversely, if you have little debt and can pay it back when you borrow, you now have become a master over money and it is now going to work for you. I will explain.

Do You Know The Rule of 72?

If you are like most people, you may not know about this rule. This rule shows the dramatic effect of time and compounding. The rule of 72 says that your money will almost DOUBLE at a point in time determined by dividing the interest rate into 72. This rule can work for or against you.

The Rule of 72 Working For You

Here is how the rule of 72 can be working for you. Let's assume that you have $10,000 and place it in an investment earning 6% interest per year. Following the rule of 72, 72 divided by 6 = 12. This means that every 12 years this money will double. If the person was 20 years old and left this money until age 68 the account would have a balance of $160,000. If the interest rate averaged 12% over the same period, that $10,000 would grow to $2,560,000. This is how you have money working for you. The key here is to have more doubling periods over your lifetime.

The Rule of 72 Working Against You

Here is how the same rule can be working against you. Let's say you have outstanding credit card debt of $10,000 and the interest rate is 18%. Following the rule of 72, 72 divided by 18 = 4. This means that every four years the money not paid off will double. In this example you now have money working against you. The key here is to pay off this debt as quickly as possible so you can have money (the rule of 72) start working for you.

How Does Time Help My Investment?

Time is also part of the equation for the rule of 72. More time means a greater number of doubling periods. Here is an example to show how time works. Let's assume $1,000 is invested in three different stages: at birth, at age 18 and at age 40, and no additional funds are added: For all three stages we will use 6% annual rate of return until age 65.

At birth, the value of the $1,000 at 65 would be $48,925, at age 18 the value of the $1,000 at 65 would be $18,780 and at age 40 the value of the $1,000 at 65 would be $4,465. As you can see, by depositing money sooner you earn more over time with the same interest rate.

How Does an Increasing Interest Rate Affect My Investment?

If a one time deposit of $1,000 was made at birth and held until age 65, and the interest rate varies for 6%, 9% and 12%, the value would be as follows:

  • At 6% the value of the account would be $48,900.
  • At 9% the value of the account would be $339,700.
  • At 12% the value of the account would be$2,347,800.

The effect of a higher interest shows how compounding works over time.

When Should I Start Investing?

The Rule of 72 should motivate people to save and invest as quickly as possible. Undoubtedly you want to start investing now. But before putting all of your available money in some investment, make sure you have the following taken care of:

  • An emergency fund that will cover up to a six months salary. Keep this emergency fund money in an easy to access savings or money market account since emergencies occur suddenly.
  • Be sure you are adequately insured. This means having enough life insurance to cover the family in the loss of income from either spouse.
  • Making your maximum IRA contribution.
  • Pay yourself first.

Once you have the above taken care of, you can begin to invest. Remember, the sooner you start your investment plan, the sooner you will begin to have money working for you.

If you should have debt and therefore no money to invest, pay off your debt as soon as possible so the Rule of 72 is not working against you. As you get your debts under control, you can begin to invest. Do not forget to establish your emergency fund before starting the investment process. I cannot stress this enough. The money invested is for your retirement. Never loose sight of this objective. Do not put your family in potential hardship by skipping the emergency fund. Once you start your investment program stick with it.

I Have No Money To Invest

If this should be your situation, examine your budget. Look for areas where you might be overspending. I will give you an example. Let's suppose that you and your spouse buy a can of soda at the vending machine at work one for lunch and one for the afternoon break.

$1.00 per soda x 4 sodas per day = $4

$4 x 20 working days in the month = $80 spent on sodas per month.

Now, if you should take water from home or use the water that is free at work you would have an extra $80 a month or 12 times $80 per month equals $960 annual savings. Now that is money you can use for investing or apply to your debt. You can probably find other areas of spending that could be curtailed and be used for your investment plan.

Conclusion

Debt makes one a slave. Start your plan to get out of debt so that your money can start working for you and not against you.

Investing makes the Rule of 72 work for you. Start investing as soon as you have removed your debt and your emergency fund is established. Remember, the longer your money is invested the more it will compound and the more money you will have for retirement and your dreams.

Should You Prepare Your Taxes Online?

More than 80 percent of taxpayers use some sort of assistance-whether it's an accountant or a desktop program-when preparing their taxes, and increasingly more and more are turning to an online tax preparation site for help filing. With a plethora of options out there, from TurboTax to TaxAct, you might be wondering why you should turn to an online tax site. Discover the advantages below.

Pros of Using Online Tax Sites

One big perk of Internet tax software is that many companies offer taxpayers a free version of their software if they meet specific criteria-typically making within a specific income bracket. Even if you don't qualify for free or discounted pricing on online tax software, their programs tend to be fairly affordable.

Another benefit of online tax software is that there is no installation needed. You can simply visit the site from any computer-meaning you're not tied down to the computer you installed it on. You can access your information from anywhere, which is saved automatically for you. Also, when the program saves your information, it doesn't require any space on your hard drive-allocating that memory for better things.

One of the biggest pros of Internet tax software is that it updates automatically. You don't have to worry about installing any updates or downloading any extra software.

Perhaps the No. 1 bonus of these websites is their free e-filing option. With most desktop tax software you have to pay to file online. When you file your taxes electronically you can get your return quickly-sometimes as soon as one week-and directly into your bank account.

While all of this sounds great, you might be worrying about the security level of these websites. There's no need to fret-all online tax software uses the same encryption technology as online banks, so your information is safe and secure.

What are the Cons of Online Tax Sites?

With the many pros of choosing an online tax preparation site, there are, of course, a few downsides to consider when determining which program is right for you.

If you need to file more than one federal tax return, you may run into some issues. With a downloaded program, you can file up to five returns. So, if you're compiling a return for Junior too, it may not be that beneficial to go the online route.

Also, there are typically no fees when filing a state tax return-unlike the online service providers, which will charge you an extra fee.

Student Loans

If you think higher education is a reliable investment in the future but at the same time you're running out of financial resources to make a good portfolio of your own, taking out a student loan might be a good solution. Sure there is other way to finance your study at college such as working part time while studying, but if you ever consider taking a loan, student loan is the most "friendly" kind of loan for college students.

Student loan will give you a financial aid during your time at college. Generally, the interest rate is set at a fixed rate. If you take the loan from federal institution, the rate will be relatively lower than any other cost of borrowing. Your loan will only be adjusted for inflation to maintain the real value of the loan. Loans are available up to a maximum of $4000, they vary with the length of the course and are available to both full time and part time students. Student loans are not normally granted to international students. However, in certain circumstances, small loans may be available.

You can apply for the student loan either to federal institutions (eg. Department of Education) or private lenders. The federal loans usually include the benefits and protections. These include:

• Cancellation / loan forgiveness / write off
• Lower and fixed rate
• Repayments should be based on ability to pay rather than repaid in the shortest possible time

The private lenders usually don't include those benefits above. You have to compare the costs of different ways of financing your education really carefully before even deciding which sources to take because once it's done there is no turning back.

Every lender has its own procedure and criteria or requirements to be met. Below are common requirements you are likely to be met if you take out a student loan:

• Are currently enrolled
• Are in good academic standing / demonstrate satisfactory progress, as evidenced by their academic record. This does not apply to commencing students.
• Show proof of income

How about the repayment? Each institution differs from one to another. Some institutions would require you to make a full repayment within a specific period of time according to how much loan you take. Meanwhile, some other institutions will defer the repayment until you're out of the college and able to earn your own income. In this case, repayments are collected through the tax system and are based on earnings, so you only pay what you can afford.

Student loans can be very helpful if you can manage it.

Sell Some of the Things Lying Around Your House and Make Money

The economy is one of the most difficult ones that many young adults have had to deal with so far in their lives. With the recession happening and many jobs lost and homes going into foreclosure, Americans are struggling more now financially than ever before. Unfortunately, a lot of these people that are struggling have had to charge everyday basic things on their credit cards and now they have considerable credit card debt and are in need of debt relief from a bankruptcy lawyer. To avoid this problem, this article will offer tips on how to make some money from things you already have lying around your home.

The first way to make some money is to have a garage sale or a tag sale. This will help you to get organized and go through all of the things that you have laying around your home that you may not need anymore and could get you some money. Some of the best selling items at garage sales are furniture and baby items like strollers, cribs and other items. In order to have a successful garage sale, first you should get the word out with several signs or even posting the event in the local newspaper. Then, you should display everything in a neat way by categories and remember to have a lot of singles for change.

The second way to make money would be to sell some things through online websites like eBay or Craigslist. This is better for larger, more expensive items as you will be able to get a much higher price for them than if you were to sell it at a garage sale. Make sure you include a detailed description of the items and always have a photo of it too as it has been proven that things without photos do not sell as well as those that have clear pictures available.

The next idea to make some money is to find a good consignment shop or resale shop to bring your items to sell. This is a good option if you are not comfortable with having a garage sale or posting things online and do not have the time or energy to do all of the steps needed to sell your goods in those manners. You will not make as much money by doing this as the consignment shop will offer you a smaller amount so they can make a profit themselves by reselling it. A good rule of thumb is that furniture resale shops will give you 50% of what the items sells for.

The final idea is to place several classified ads in your local newspaper to sell the things that you would like. If you are uncomfortable having strangers coming to your home to look at the things, meet at a neutral location like a restaurant parking lot instead. This will be similar to the online sales but will just be seen by people in your local community that get the newspaper.

Why is it Good to Save Money?

While our grandparent made a habit from saving a few dollars every month, today we almost completely forgot about this useful practice, and this is true for both poor and wealthy people. The Pew Research Center's Social & Demographic Trends project showed in 2008 that 75 percent of American adults say they don't save enough.

The Consumer Federation of America reported last year that less than half of Americans have savings accounts. Of those who do save money, one-third has less than $2,000 set aside for unforeseen expenses. Wealthier homes save more than poor ones, but overall the saving habits of Americans look like in the times of the Great Depression.

If your goal is to build a fortune, saving money is the first step of a long journey. If you live up all your money every month, you have nothing to build on. Poor economical climate also motivates people to save: people are trying to survive, and expect for the worst, so they try to set aside as much as they can.

You should be saving no matter how economy is doing, because no one can know how today circumstances will be changed tomorrow. One's life can have major changes suddenly, with unexpected expenses, which can bring you in debt if you don't have some cash in a saving account.

Your car can broke down suddenly, and need some serious repairs that can overthrow your monthly budget. Or you may be involved in an accident, and even if your insurance covers most of the damage, you will have to pay the deductible. There are other possible unexpected expenses: you may have to repair your roof after a severe storm, your computer can broke down and need to be replaced, or you can get ill and have to pay for the doctor visits.

You can have to make an unexpected trip to your parents, or maybe a pet needs to be taken to a vet. There is no guarantee the utilities, insurance, service rates you are paying will not change suddenly. And even if nothing happens to you, your family may have unexpected expenses and need your help.

It is always better to have some money tucked away in a bank account that you don't need, than not having any money when you need it. If you don't use your savings, there will be plenty occasions when it will come handy, like weddings, or graduations.

7 great ideas how to save your money

I wanted to call this blog GO COUPONS because these 7 ideas are so basic I consider them to be a General Overview. Also I like the positive energy of the word GO! So for all you experts, please indulge those of us catching up.

1. First and foremost, only buy items you normally eat or use. It's not a bargain if you or your family won't eat it.

2. Keep an open mind. When the store brand name is considerably cheaper, try it to see if you like it before you commit to it. If you are purchasing higher priced items with a coupon because of a long term habit, but not seeing significant savings, you may want to reassess and try the generic brand. (However, don't forget rule #1. If you really prefer the taste or quality, stick with it.)

3. The unit price is an important number. This is when you will be glad you learned math in school. (You never thought you'd use it, right?) Divide the price by the weight if it isn't posted, then look at all the other items and compare. Size is not always a factor. Recently, I compared the large bag of tortilla chips with the $2 bag, thinking bigger was better value. But in this one instance, the smaller bag was actually cheaper. I was surprised!

4. Watch for those coupons that pair up. Especially with items that rarely get couponed. Meaning fruit, dairy and meat. For instance: if you have a free or discount coupon for crackers with the purchase of milk you already planned to buy, you are getting more value with that milk purchase. Better yet if it's for fruit or meat.

5. Ask if you're uncertain about any advertised special. The cashiers can tell you if you must purchase a certain amount or number of items on special. Are two loaves of bread advertised as 2 for $4 going to ring up as $2 each. If you can't use 2, don't buy 2. The same is true for those 10 for $10 items. Do you really want 10 Symphony bars, or do you just want one for $1? Be smart and don't get caught in that trap.

6. Don't use the Sunday ad immediately unless the store is running a special. Often the store will wait to discount their price a week or two later. Wait for the price drop.

7. Plan your meals around the store specials and buy in volume when the prices are good. That way you won't have to pay full price because you ran out. You can afford to wait for the low price.

Well, there are many more tips, but I promised I'd stick to seven. Have fun shopping and saving!

Financial Planning

Thanks to credit and debit cards or what most like to call plastic money, many people are living in debts that they can no longer be able to control. Credit cards raise the chances of over spending because they reduce your consciousness on payment since you do not get to do any mental accounting. The route to negatively affecting your personal finances is not monitoring your spending.

On the other hand, debit cards are no better either though you get to spend what is in your bank account; most banks give an automatic over draft when you spend beyond what you have. They just send you an overdraft notice and that is when you realize that you spent what you did not have. Again, this will dent your personal finances.

Write down your budget so that you can keep track of how your spending compared with your net income. If you budget well, you can be able to save for a home instead of getting a mortgage. You can also save up for education and retirement. Budgeting will help you to be a good steward and administrator of your personal resources.

To ensure that you live a debt free life, sit down and write down your debts from the lowest to the highest. Identify whether you can make any extra income by cutting down on your expenditure. Start paying your debts from the lowest and pay a minimum payment on the rest. When you are done with the first, go to second lowest and so on.

Financial Freedom

When talking about financial freedom, different people can mean entirely different things. For some it means getting to do what they want because they have enough money. For others it means having enough income from investments that they are free of any financial concerns.

Of course, few people are actually unconcerned about financial matters regardless of how much income they have. Some even get more worried about their finances as they get wealthier. And few people get to do everything they would like to do no matter how much money they make. Time and health can limit us as much as a lack of money.

Nonetheless, if used properly money certainly can buy more security and more freedom, to the extent that those things are possible in this world. So lets look at how we can actually use money more effectively.

How do we actually achieve financial freedom?

This article is not about the "making money" part of the equation. That's covered in a thousand good books. Money does not bring the freedom automatically though, so this is about some of the problems we run into once we start making more, and what to do about them.

Freedom From Financial Worries?

First, if you want greater security you want it for the obvious reasons as well as to "feel" more secure. Setting up streams of investment income helps with the physical needs. Once you have enough income from enough sources you are free from needing a job. Of course that only happens if your lifestyle remains within the means of your income.

We often grow our lifestyles along with our rising incomes. This makes sense if you were eating cheap noodles and driving rusty old cars before. It resolves itself in time if income rises faster than the new expenses. But it's a lot easier to escape the "rat race" and relax with your investment income if your expenses are lower, so watch your changing habits.

If you notice that there seems to be no natural level of comfort where you are content, and that you just continue to "need" more as you make more, the problem might be one that requires some self-reflection and self-work rather than more money. Even millionaires go broke feeding their habits, tastes, and the needs of the ego.

Also, be aware that you can feel insecure no matter what your level of income. Often with more money you will feel more afraid of losing that money. The resolution to this is again not in money itself, which only buys the little bit of physical security available to us. To feel free of worry over money, you have to look beyond money to whatever psychological and spiritual practices help you.

Freedom To Do What You Want?

Money can buy a lot of freedom of choice in this world. With enough you can live how you choose, go where you like to, help who you want, and buy what you desire. But it only accomplishes these things if used properly.

Often people get so caught up in the process of making money that they forget why they wanted to make it in the first place. Meanwhile, they adopt a new lifestyle that eats up all the income which could have paid for their goals if they happened to remember them at some point. Some people really do want that big home and several new cars, but others just fall into that life as a consolation prize for a dream life they just couldn't figure out how to achieve.

If you want to travel the world, and for you that's what financial freedom means, you have to plan for that. You may even have to quit your job at some point if it gets in the way. And why not? If it is supposed to help you towards your goal, it better not do the opposite, right?

Whatever the term financial freedom means to you, think about it more specifically. Then start making plans. Money alone can come and go by the millions without offering freedom of any sort. You have to learn how to use it wisely rather than just chase it blindly.

Easy Financial Plan

Why is financial success as a young adult so important? Because those who take charge of their financial situation are more confident, comfortable and happier than those who do not. The ones who do not have control of their finances dig themselves deeper and deeper, so that it becomes difficult or impossible to achieve the things they would like for themselves and their families. This might include putting children through college, having more free time, owning a home, taking vacations, starting a business, or funding a comfortable retirement. You have two options - you either control your finances or let them control you.

The "70-20-10 Plan"

You have your own unique set of financial circumstances at the moment. You may find yourself with significant student loans, credit card debt that continues to grow, spending more money than you are making, or simply not feeling as in control as you would like over your finances. Regardless of your situation, chances are there is some room for improvement in your current financial program, if one even exists.

That is where the "70-20-10 Plan" comes into play. This system is not exclusively for young adults; you will start using this now and continue to use it for the rest of your life. Here is how it works (percentages are for after-tax earnings):
70% - Living Expenses
20% - Debt Reduction
10% - Long Term Savings

This simple plan will work whether your income is $30,000 per year or $300,000 per year. This plan will become a lasting habit, and you will build a disciplined financial program that you can follow as your income continues to grow.

Living Expenses

Living expenses are the expenses you incur to live your lifestyle. These items include rent/mortgage, car payment, electric, cable, groceries and many other items. You should be spending no more than 70% of your after-tax income on living expenses. Track all of these expenses on a monthly basis. You have one goal each month - do your best to come in under budget. Keep track of each expense by keeping every one of your receipts and by monitoring any debit or credit card accounts online. You should enter all expenses into your spreadsheet in the middle and at the end of each month.

Debt Reduction

Young adults can be faced with a variety of debts, such as student loans and credit cards. The goal is to consistently make payments towards all debt, paying down the highest interest rate debt first. If your student loans are at 3% and your credit card is at 15%, make your regular monthly payment on the student loan and put the rest towards the credit card debt. If you have no debt, congratulations! This will give you an opportunity to contribute the entire 20% of your after-tax income towards long-term savings. If you do have debt, just continue to contribute 20% of your after-tax income towards it, and it will be gone before you know it!

Long Term Savings

The final 10% of your after-tax income should go towards long term savings. Long term savings could include retirement, education for your children, a second home at the beach, or the funding of a start-up business. Even if you don't know exactly what it is for, put it away now so that you will have options in the future. You should have six months of living expenses set aside as an emergency fund in your bank savings account. If you have expenses of $2,000 per month, make sure to build a $12,000 emergency fund. If you have not built up that six month cushion, place your final 10% into your bank savings account. A great long-term savings vehicle is a Roth IRA, which has great tax benefits. For specific recommendations on where to direct these funds, consult a Certified Financial Planner or another advisor who comes recommended to you by someone you trust.

A Final Word

This simple approach to gaining financial security will give you peace of mind to do the things you want in life. Forming effective financial habits as a young adult will make your life less complicated and allow you to focus on accomplishing your goals and dreams.

Debt Settlement Guide

If you are among the thousands upon thousands that are up to their eye balls in credit card debt, perhaps it is time that you sit down and take a really hard, honest look at your situation and come up with a plan. Otherwise you will spend the next few years making payments without really making any progress in repaying back the debt. You are in a particularly bad position if you owe $10,000 or more and you can only afford to make minimum payments. At that rate, you will end up paying a lot on interests alone without ever being able to repay the debt and that is why a lot of families and individuals end up filing bankruptcy.

When you are in this situation, it is highly recommended that you find a debt settlement company that can help you eliminate your debt legally in a short period of time. From 12 months and up to 48 months depending on what you are comfortable paying each month.

A debt settlement company will negotiate with all of your creditors on your behalf and reach and agreement for a repayment plan that will be a fraction of your total debt. This outcome is far better for your creditors than if you would file bankruptcy. This way, they get to collect some of their money back instead of losing everything. You can end up paying 50% of your total debt only without ruining your credit filing for bankruptcy.

You can get financial help and get rid of the stress of having creditors harassing you all the time.

Eliminate Credit Card Debt in 1-2 Years

It may happen that the neighbor next to your house has filed a case of bankruptcy to get rid of the credit card debt, he had to pay. Following the person may be risky for looking at the complications that he will be having at least for 7 to 10 years. The US government possesses 80 percent chances of not approving the case judging the present situation of you neighbor. It will be hard for the person to have a loan for the stipulated time and he cannot spend his money for a big expense.

There is another option as the debt settlement to eliminate credit card debt. The companies offer you a lot of options to choose from. First, the service will give you free advice and have a better comprehension how to eliminate the debt. Second, the service will accumulate all the credit accounts to eliminate the balance up to 60%. The harassing calls from the creditors will not bother you any more. The debt collectors will now not call you either. There are numerous facilities for you. The setback that you were having due to the debt will be soon cured. Usually it takes only 1 to 2 tears to come out of your debt related issues. You can easily understand if the balance amount is dragged down to such an extent, the monthly installments will be dramatically less. Do it Yourself - Debt Consolidation

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have had a really tough time in the last year. People who never expected to have a debt problem have found themselves in over their heads and in a lot of financial trouble. The good news is that it's a great time to get a fresh start and make some serious plans to get your debt under control. While you could take advantage of a service, you can also attempt to try do-it-yourself debt consolidation. There are plenty of options that you can try on your own to get your financial burden lightened.

Do You Own Your Home?

This is the easiest route to take for classic DIY consolidation. If you have been paying on your mortgage for a significant period of time and have built up enough equity, you can apply for a home equity loan or refinance. In this situation, be sure that the new terms are favorable for a long term solution, however. Don't settle for adjustable rate mortgages or other schemes that may cause you to lose your home in the future. Also, carefully assess the new payments to ensure that you can afford the terms. The extra money that you get in equity can be applied to your debts and you can start over from scratch with a better plan in place. For the best terms and interest rates, start this process before you have missed payments, defaulted, or otherwise impacted your credit report.

Zero Interest Can Be a Good Bet

It seems that everyone gets those unsolicited credit card offers in the mail. While you may just throw those away or shred them, it may be time to take another look at what they may offer you. If you have a moderate amount of debt that needs consolidated, look for a zero percent introductory period of at six months; one year is even better. Apply the problematic balance to the new card and then don't charge any additional expenses on either account. Budget the amount that you will need to pay the balance within the grace period and stick to it religiously. This works as a long term debt consolidation strategy only if you are disciplined. The key here is to know what the terms are and not add any more debt during the time that you are paying off the balance. Once that is accomplished, feel free to leave the accounts open. It's actually good for your credit. However, only charge what you can pay off each and every month.

While there are plenty of other do-it-yourself options for debt consolidation, these are the most common. Feel free to explore more creative options as well, or to use the services of a professional if you need a bit more accountability during the process.

Consolidate Your Credit Card Debt For Huge Saving

Options for consolidating credit card debt expand exponentially each year. New services appear constantly and promise faster results, greater savings and quicker retirement of principal balances. Nevertheless, the best way to consolidate credit card debt and enjoy huge savings remains highly personal.

Each person experiences unique financial challenges. The ability to repay debts with ease is based on income, living expenses and total debt payments. A person who earns a large income may have little ability to save when owing a correspondingly high level of debt. Similarly, a person who earns a below average income may save a portion of a weekly salary check easily when living a modest lifestyle and owing little or no debt. To a large extent, in both circumstances, personal choices and lifestyle determine the amount of wealth accumulated long term.

Anyone struggling to pay debts has a wide range of options available to reduce monthly payments. These options range from small private changes in spending habits to filing bankruptcy. In the middle ground, many people discover that debt consolidation programs produce rapid results without the stigma and sever consequences of filing bankruptcy.

The best way to combine credit card debts into a single monthly payment depends on the amount of debts owed. When debts total less than $10,000, a debt management plan may be the best choice. When the total of credit card debts owed is greater than $10,000, settlement plans may be the best choice. This difference is based on the way that services charge fees for administering programs.

Both management plans and settlement plans tend to charge a relatively small monthly administration fee. In most cases, these fees range from $30 to $50 per month. In addition, settlement plans also charge an initial setup fee equal to the first scheduled plan payment.

A management plan typically reduces monthly payments by 20% whereas a settlement plan typically reduces monthly payments by 40% to 60%. If a settlement plan requires a $900 per month payment, the initial fee for participating in the plan would also be $900. The greater savings available under settlement plans is achieved by negotiating substantial reductions in the amount of principal owed. In most cases, the initial settlement plan fee is collected by negotiating a one-month grace period before regular plan payments begin.

To discover the best way to consolidate credit card debt and enjoy huge savings, request several quotes from top-rated services. Review estimated costs and results from both types of plans using a side-by-side comparison. Look carefully at the total amount paid to retire all principal balances. After comparing available options and actual savings, the best choice will become clear.

Debt Settlement Vs Debt Consolidation?

Both debt settlement and debt reduction are designed to reduce and free you from your excessive credit. However, each one has their own consequence on your credit rating and future expenses. In choosing between debt settlement vs. debt consolidation, you need to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each process.

Debt Settlement

In debt settlement, a percentage of your debt is reduced right away by your creditor. As a result, you will find immediate relief in your monthly payments. The remaining monthly payments can be easier to handle.

With debt settlement, you can proceed with rebuilding your credit score from this moment on. Rather than making late payments and suffering from high interest rates, you can concentrate on better credit management.

However, there are certain disadvantages to debt settlement. The biggest downside is its instant effect on your credit score. Debt settlement is like foreclosure in the real estate industry. You can expect a score lower than 500. Although it may boost your credit rating, you will have to work with subprime lenders for the next couple of years.

In addition, settlement can have tax implications. The IRS sees it as getting a cash gift or income. Depending on the state you live, there might be additional state taxes that you will have to pay.

Debt Consolidation

Like settlement, consolidation is another avenue for getting out of debt. Here the creditor will work out lower rates with your creditors. Instead of several payments, you make a single lump sum payment to the debt consolidation firm who will take charge of settling your accounts. The debt consolidation firm will also take care of the paperwork, cancel fees, and terminate the accounts. With their help, you can be out of debt in a span of less than 5 years.

On the other hand, consolidation will have minimal effect on your credit rating. Unless you prove that you are regularly settling your account, most lenders will not allow you to take out credit. You need to make sure that the consolidation company is promptly settling your payments.

When choosing between settlement vs. consolidation, you need to bear in mind that there is no right formula for eliminating debt. The former can give your finances an immediate boost but will compromise your credit score while the latter has little impact on your rating but will require some time.

There are different factors that can have an effect on your choice between debt settlement vs. debt consolidation. Before making a choice, do some research and find some tips on how to choose between debt settlement vs. debt consolidation.
